and certification
Assessment
All assessments and opportunities for progression occur in the context
of our lessons. Our regular classroom activities centre around five
levels: salsa one through four, and the merengue circle (which is substitutable
with another Latin dance). There are two stages of advancement in each
level (intra-level): demonstrator and group leader. Transfer to a different
level occurs usually after inter- and intra-level assessment is completed.
Workshops are
provided in the form of: the teachers course, teachers Sundays, and
a number of occasionals according to demand. Opportunities for large-group
teaching arise frequently, mainly through our external commitments.
Intra-Level
Proficiencies
Demonstrator:
- Fluent in
specific level content;
- Good spatial
and temporal register to facilitate accurate visual communication
of level content;
- Full command
of remedial teaching skills, as described in the "Nutshell"
of the course manual.
Group Leader
(Prerequisite: two successful sessions as demonstrator in the same level)
- Understand
the underlying principles of the level;
- Ability to
adapt the key practices to suit the abilities of the class.
- Proficiency
with classroom skills: cueing, resource allocation, lesson planning.
Inter-Level
Proficiency
Display an understanding of the principles of progression through all
levels and how the contents in each function together to achieve this.
Workshop Skills
- Be able to
isolate and articulate the principles of the workshop theme;
- Develop practices
that demonstrate these principles;
- Design a course
of progressive series of lessons, within the constraints of available
resources.
Large Group
Teaching
Conduct lessons with classes containing 200 or more attendees.
Certification
Affiliate Status
Admitted upon:
- Completion
of the Teachers Course;
- Satisfactory
performance as Demonstrator in one level.
Member Status
Admitted upon:
- Satisfactory
performance as Group Leader in three of five levels;
- Satisfactory
assessment in Inter-Level Proficiency.
Consul Status
Admitted upon:
- Satisfactory
performance as Group Leader in five levels;
- Satisfactory
performance in Workshop or Large-Group teaching.
