Lessons: Salsa

We welcome new members to our society throughout the year, be they complete beginners or experienced dancers. Our classes consist of four levels of varying difficulty, all running at the same time. Learners join the level that they are most comfortable in and which most suits their ability. Each level is taught by at least two teachers, though larger groups tend to have more teachers in them, especially in levels one and two.

Each lesson is complete, in that you will be able to practice what you’ve just learned without the help of a teacher come the end of the session. This is a good thing since you can’t take a teacher with you everywhere you go. (We are investigating a means of enhancing teacher portability by popular request.) Even after just one lesson, you’ll have a good idea of what salsa is about. The levels are progressive, so our members find themselves staying in a level for at least three weeks before moving on.

A major reason why our lessons are so popular is because of the way it combines flexibility with progression. Since all the levels run in parallel during the class, you don’t have to attend week in, week out. You can miss a number of lessons and still be able to pick up where you left off. We do recommend that you come in at a lower level when you first return to refresh your memory.

We also have a culture of partner swapping, which makes learning much more interesting AND actually helps you improve faster. Salsa is a dance about people, and we’d like our lessons to reflect that in encouraging our members to dance with as many other people as possible.
