Our
members learn the merengue as short combinations of turns and walks that
are easy to lead and follow. A different combination is taught every week;
to maintain interest and so that students are exposed to the widest variety
of elements in the merengue.
Students are typically arranged in a
large circle (or two concentric circles), usually followers inside and
leads outside. Every combination incorporates a one place move to the
left (or right depending the day) for the follower. Once the combination
is mastered, partners change frequently when followers move around the
merengue circle.
Speaking from experience and to members
of the society, the merengue circle format is a favourite because it
gives people the opportunity to meet and dance with people in their
own level as well as those from others. The popularity of the lessons
is also due to the ease by which the dance can be learned in a short
period of time, and many people look forward to them more than the salsa
lessons.
Merengue is certainly here to stay and
we expect to see more people becoming involved in this fun and extravagant
yet remarkably simple dance form.
